Memories
of Growing Up - Education
By Axel Boilesen, March 2013
I went to school at Cotesfield,
Nebraska my entire pre-college years. Looking back the most
noteworthy item of those school years was probably that my future
wife, Betty Ann Barr, and I were classmates until she went to
Grand Island High School instead of Cotesfield High School.
Of course by staying in Cotesfield and going to Cotesfield High
School I have been always able to honestly say that I graduated
third in my class. Which is great until I have to confess that
there were only five in my class.

Boilesen, first row on the steps, second from the left. "My
overalls look pretty new in this picture. When I did get new
denims I never wanted them washed until they had to be because
I loved the look and feel of new jeans. Not like today when
kids actually like them faded and torn."

Barr, first row, second from right, would marry Axel on August
25, 1946.
Axel's Report Card for Grade 5,
Cotesfield, Nebraska shows that Axel had perfect attendance,
was a solid B+ student and his conduct was pretty good until
the end of the year when he was written up for "Whispers
Too Much." The good news is that by the end of the year
he "Shows Improvement" for his conduct.

Cotesfield High School
published a quarterly mimeographed paper called the "Cotesfield
Star". In the Spring edition was a section titled "GOODBYE
TO THE 1941 SENIORS".
The following was
written regarding Axel, one of the five high school seniors
who was graduating (each of whom got their respective paragraph
and "Advice" in this Goodbye section).
