Axel and Johanna Marie (Schack) Boilesen settled in the Dannevirke area in 1883 (their son Hans' census record says he was born in Nebraska). Johanna's obituary says they moved to Howard County in 1884.

Johanna Marie Schack Boilesen and Axel Christian Boilesen had ten children (seven girls and three boys): Anna Marie (Niels) Lassen 1881-1938 born in Newark, NJ; Hans (Maren Jensen) March 15, 1883 - March 6, 1969; Mary (Anton) Rasmussen July 7, 1887-1928, Infant son Chris; Chris (Elizabeth Jensen) March 24, 1889 - February 19, 1976; Infant daughter Christina 1892; Christina (John) Pedersen; Axelina (Rasmus) Rasmussen February 26, 1894 - April 22, 1980; Rose (Nels) Larsen; Emma (Ed) Wells April 27, 1897 - May 20, 1994; and Margaret (Fred) Bebernes September 14, 1901 - February 12, 1992. (respective spouses are identified in parenthesis). Note: The obituary for Margaret says that she was proceeded in death by six sisters and 3 brothers).

Axel Christian Boilesen died on July 20, 1903 and the July 23, 1903 St. Paul Republican reported that,"The funeral procession was unusually large, there being about 100 teams. A higher tribute to the esteem in which this man was held during life could not have been paid."

After Axel's death Johanna married Martinus Andersen (Born in Denmark September 30, 1872 - July 30, 1955).

(See Johanna's Obituary (Mrs. Andersen) in The Phonograph, October 3, 1934)

(1) There seem to be a number of spellings for the Shack family name. Skak is the spelling which appears in the Hoptrup parish records and Anne (Johanna's mother) signed her name Anne Skak to some of her letters to America. Shak appears in Anne's obituary, and Shack appears in Johanne's obituary. Source: Draft 3-7-89 re: Johanne Skak

When Johanne was two years old, her mother died. Her father then married her mother's younger sister, Anne Kirstine. They moved to a small farm in nearby Arnitlund where she grew up with her half-sister Katrine and half-brother Bertel.

In September 1881, at the age of 17, Johanne immigrated with a girl friend to America. Later that month she and Axel Christian Boilesen were married in Newark, New Jersey.

Johanne and Axel's first child, Anna Marie, was born on January 14, 1881. There seems to be some confusion about whether she was born in Denmark previous to Johanne's immigration, as her birth date suggests, or whether she was born in New Jersey. Assuming Anna was born in New Jersey, and that her birth date is correct, it was probably September 1880 when Johanne came to this country, rather than 1881 as her obituary states. Anna would then have been born four months after her arrival.

Anders and Catherine were married after the death of his father on June 27, 1862. Owing to his age his mother had to sign for him according to the law. He was just 18-19 years old. After Catherine Marie's death in 1866 (when Johanna was about two years of age) Anders married Catherine's sister, Anna. They lived on their farm near Hoptrup (see below for hand-tinted photograph of Johanna Schack's parents family home.
